Welcome to Downtown Sarasota

The heart of Sarasota is a bustling and vibrant area with a charming Main Street running through the center

At the heart of Sarasota is the downtown district, the area’s beating heart. This charming region is perfect for those who love city life as it’s like the ideal little metropolitan area. Downtown Sarasota seamlessly blends the best of urban and suburban living.

It’s an urban city, but there is ample opportunity to have a traditional suburban lifestyle. You can live, work, and play here. Main Street is always busy and bustling, but the people are kind, and it feels like a friendly, small town. Young professionals thrive in the downtown area with beautiful surroundings and colorful streets like Orange, Lemon, and Pineapple.

What to Love

  • Wide variety of neighborhoods that blend urban and suburban living
  • Amazing range of restaurants, bars, nightlife and also events that happen almost every night
  • Fantastic performing arts scene where you can see anything from live music to touring Broadway plays

People & Lifestyle

Considered the city's cultural and civic center, Downtown Sarasota brims with excitement and opportunity with some of Sarasota's best restaurants, shops, galleries, and theaters. The district overlooks the bay and is lined with sculptures, which isn’t surprising considering that art and culture are at Downtown Sarasota's core. Anyone interested in living in the middle of everything will find the allure of downtown impossible to resist.

The luxury condominiums put you just minutes away from art festivals, block parties, farmers' markets, and coffee shops. The central downtown district is also very walkable, making getting around the area a breeze. But there are several different neighborhoods within Downtown Sarasota that provide variety dependent on what you're looking for in a home.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

Located in the heart of Sarasota, Patrick's 1481 is a long-running neighborhood hotspot serving burgers and other comfort food, plus great drinks. Dine on Sarasota's best Latin American cuisine at Selva Grill, a Peruvian eatery defined by inventive dishes and delicious cocktails.

Other popular restaurants in the district include:

  • Mattison’s Grille: Tiki-inspired setting known for its New American dishes, creative cocktails, and live music
  • O & A Coffee: Excellent local coffee place with craft roasts and quality supplies
  • Classico: Classic and sophisticated Italian chophouse serving elevated pub fare
  • Cest La Vie: French bakery and counter-serve known for their excellent croissants and crêpes
  • Mediterraneo: Authentic Italian cuisine, rated one of the top restaurants in Florida

For shopping, Evelyn and Arthur is a noted women's clothing store selling contemporary clothing, accessories, and unique gifts. The store was brought to life by Evelyn and Arthur Lewis, who migrated from New York to Palm Beach, Florida, for a more relaxed lifestyle. Over the past 30 years, the store has expanded to several different locations and has partnered with numerous modern women's brands.

Things to Do in Downtown Sarasota

Open every Saturday, rain or shine, the Sarasota Farmer Market is a community fixture where residents and visitors can interact and shop downtown, gaining knowledge and fresh produce from local farmers, businesses, and artisans. The farmers' market transforms into a special Holiday Night Market during the holidays. Stroll through a winter wonderland ornamented with twinkling lights and decor while looking for the perfect gifts.

The Thunder By The Bay Music & Motorcycle Festival is a three-day event held to benefit Suncoast Charities for Children. Enjoy live music and then a charity motorcycle ride along with great food, contests, and more.

Celebrate the arts on Downtown Sarasota's Main Street during the annual Festival of the Arts, from Orange Avenue to Links Avenue. Each year the festival continues expanding due to its success, taking up more than five city blocks and hosting over 200 national and regional artists. This free outdoor festival is among the top 100 art festivals in the country.

Sarasota is known for its world-class professional and community theatres. Experience the arts intimately at Urbanite Theatre and the West Coast Black Theatre Troupe. The Van Wezel is also always worth a visit. This world-famous purple building/event venue often brings in touring Broadway shows––and locals will know if you’re an out-of-towner based on how you pronounce it (hint: it’s “wayzel” not “weasel”).

A riff on the iconic Oktoberfest celebration, Sarasota Rocktoberfest mixes beer and live music for an epic event that's fun for everyone. Experience an authentic Oktoberfest experience combined with live musical performances. Pause between acts to feast on smoked sausages, sauerkraut, cabbage, pretzels, and authentic German beer.

Schools

Those who live in Siesta Key attend the schools operated by the Sarasota Public School District, which features acclaimed schools. There are also several exclusive private schools and academies. Notable secondary schools include the University of South Florida Sarasota–Manatee, a branch campus of the University of South Florida and the FSU/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training.
