Rob Wucki of the Sarasota Model Yacht Club told WWSB this week that his group races model RC sailboats at Nathan Benderson Park "six to seven days a week." The club has about a hundred members, and they sail the lakes up front as well as the water off West Lake. No regatta brings them out. They are a weekday fixture at a venue best known for its race weekends.
That says a lot about the park in fall 2026. Most of what is new at the lake this season serves someone walking the loop on a Wednesday morning or stopping for a coffee before heading to University Town Center. The shoreline repair, the market's new day and spot, the trail extension commissioners just approved, and the indoor complex planned for Regatta Island all lean the same way. Here is how those pieces fit together, starting at the water's edge.
The Lake Edge Is Whole Again
Hurricane Ian hit the southern shoreline project almost as soon as it started. Sarasota County's Southern Shoreline Stabilization page explains that repeated storms and hurricanes had eroded the big rowing lake's banks. Stabilization began in fall 2022, and Ian struck soon after demolition wrapped up. Crews restored the floating docks and the southwest corner in 2023 and 2024. The heavier damage along the center and southeast shoreline needed more engineering and permitting before work could start.
That stretch is now nearly finished. The county reported on August 31 that restoration along the southeast and southern shorelines was complete, with minor repairs still planned for the shell path on the east side. In its September 30 update, the county said the southeast corner and boat ramp area passed substantial completion inspection on September 18, 2026. Sod, minor asphalt repairs and cleanup of the old staging areas were still on the list, and the final inspection was expected in early October.
All of this matters most to people on foot. The county has said the park would stay open during construction, though parts of the lake perimeter trail might close temporarily. With the shoreline work winding down, the loop most visitors use is getting back to normal just as cooler weather arrives.
A Week at the Lake, Day by Day
The park's own calendar lists a routine that runs Monday through Friday whether or not a boat is racing. The schedule below comes from the Nathan Benderson Park events calendar for mid-October 2026.
| Day | What's on the calendar | Hours listed |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Sip N' Brew beverage truck by the west-shore playground | 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. |
| Wednesday | Sip N' Brew | 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. |
| Thursday | Sip N' Brew, plus free SWEATSanity dance fitness on dates such as Oct. 15 | 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; dance class 9 to 10 a.m. |
| Friday | The Market at NBP, starting Oct. 23 | 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. |
| Ongoing | Dragon Boat 101, Learn to Row classes with Sarasota Crew, Camp Gladiator | Varies by program |
Sip N' Brew serves custom drinks from a truck parked by the playground on the park's west shore. The rowing and paddling programs are open to new paddlers, and Sarasota Crew teaches youth and adult classes on the same course used for championships.
Friday is the newest slot on that table, and it is the biggest change of the season.
The Market Moves to Friday and the Playground Lot
The Market at NBP opens its 2026–27 run on Friday, October 23, and the park lists it every Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through March 26, 2027. It sets up in the Homewood Suites additional parking lot next to the park playground. The market's event page promises more than 20 local artists and small businesses, along with coffee and infused drinks, produce, fresh baked goods, gluten-free options, crafters, food trucks, live music, themed events and free parking. My Promotions organizes it and handles vendor applications.
Last season's market ran on Tuesdays. Your Observer reported that it started October 21, 2025, after My Promotions organizer Jessica Gill saw a need for a weekday market near the park. The paper counted 55 vendors at the November 25 market that year. The park's January 2026 Tuesday listing put that market at the drop-off loop, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with more than 30 vendors. The park has not said whether Tuesday markets will return alongside the Friday run, so check its calendar before planning a Tuesday visit.
The move puts the market at the same corner as the playground and the Sip N' Brew truck. That gives the west shore three draws on Friday mornings in one spot.
Race Weekends Still Shape the Fall
The weekend calendar runs differently. The Benderson Chase Regatta came to the lake during Sarasota Oktoberfest on October 10 and 11. The rest of the fall is mostly runs, walks and community events, with a few big competitions in December:
- October 17: Behind the Smile Memorial 5K Run/Walk, 8 to 11 a.m., then the Water Lantern Festival, 4:30 to 8:30 p.m.
- October 24: Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.
- October 27: Trick or Treat on the Lake.
- October 31: Tidewell Foundation Remembrance Walk.
- November 7: New Paddler Day for cancer survivors.
- December 5: Plant High Winter Sprints, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- December 12: CSCAA Open Water National Championship and the Sarasota Christmas Glow Run 5K.
- December 13: Sarasota Half Marathon & 5K.
Throughout October, the park is also running its United in Pink breast cancer awareness series. Most of these weekend events are open to people who have never sat in a racing shell. A night of floating lanterns and a Halloween event on the lake both fit a park that is increasingly built around the people who live nearby.
What the Next Two Years Add
The two biggest projects on the horizon push in that same direction.
On October 12, 2026, WWSB reported that Sarasota County commissioners approved more than $3 million to extend the Legacy Trail by nearly two miles. The extension creates a "park-to-park" connection near Nathan Benderson Park, links the park to 23 miles of existing trail and reaches the UTC area. The trail follows a former CSX rail line that went unused after 1992. The county and the Trust for Public Land bought 12.5 miles of it in 2004, and the trail has grown from there. For cyclists and walkers, the lake loop will eventually connect to a trail system that reaches well beyond the park.
The second project sits on Regatta Island. Your Observer reported on September 3 that the planned Multi-Sport Complex and Boathouse would include about 100,000 square feet of flexible indoor sports flooring and 10 boat bays for rowing and paddling. The target is summer 2028, at an estimated cost of $75 million to $80 million. The same story says USRowing offices and a National Rowing Hall of Fame have been discussed, but neither has been confirmed. WWSB reported in July that the 2026–27 state budget includes $10 million for the complex. Plans call for community event space and a storm-resilient venue built for year-round use. Earlier coverage in Your Observer listed a full kitchen and food-service area among the planned concessions. Right now the park's food options are the Sip N' Brew beverage truck and, starting October 23, the food trucks at the Friday market, so a kitchen would be a real change.
One nearby project is further off. The Sarasota Orchestra Music Center is planned for 5701 Fruitville Road, between Honore Avenue and Cattlemen Road. In its October 2026 coverage, Sarasota Magazine reports that construction is expected to begin next year and that the center is slated to open for the 2029–30 season. Until then, the orchestra's 2026–27 season stays downtown. Masterworks is at Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, Pops is also at Van Wezel, Chamber Soirées are at Holley Hall and Discoveries concerts are at the Sarasota Opera House.
The first Friday market of the season is October 23 at 9 a.m., in the Homewood Suites lot next to the playground.
At The Ackerman Group, we follow how projects like the Legacy Trail extension and the Regatta Island complex change daily life around University Town Center. If you own near the park and want to know how these changes could factor into a sale, we're glad to walk you through it. When you're ready, tell us "I'm Looking to Sell," and we'll start with your street and the lake down the road.
